The Best Moments
Still Happen
Face to Face
A&A CHESS is dedicated to making traditional chess sets for the kind of encounter the modern world is quietly forgetting: unhurried, face to face, and worth remembering.
The year 1997 did not mark the official founding of A&A CHESS. It marked the year our founder met his wife. We call it the brand's first year because he has always believed: everything meaningful began in that moment.
"A&A" comes from the first letters of their names. She is more than half of the brand name; she has been a partner in every decision since. Three years later, in 2000, they entered the chess industry together. As they looked at the sets on the market, something always felt missing. Some were poorly made. Others used cheap materials. Most had simply been manufactured, without anyone ever stopping to ask: Who will hold this piece? Where will they play? And across the board, who are they hoping to meet?
So they decided to make their own. He shaped every contour. He designed the first board. He listened carefully for the exact sound a chess piece should make when it lands. It was never just a business calculation. It was the most honest answer he could give to a simple question: if I were the one making this, how good could it really be?
"Every pawn is a potential queen."
— A&A CHESSOn the board, the pawn is the smallest piece: limited in power, slow in movement, often the first to be sacrificed and the last to be remembered. And yet, if it completes the long journey to the other side, it can become anything it chooses. We believe every person who picks up a chess piece is that pawn, still moving forward. Our job is to make the road worthy of every step they take.
In an age of screens, a chessboard is a quiet act of resistance.
Information arrives in milliseconds. AI finishes our sentences before we have fully formed them. Friendships unfold behind small panes of glass we carry in our pockets. The world has never been faster, or more connected. And yet, to sit across from another person, with nothing between you but a game, and give the next two hours of your attention to no one else, this kind of moment has quietly become rare. And precious.
We are not against progress. We use the same technologies as everyone else. But we believe a chess set does something nothing else can: it brings two people into the same space. It asks for eye contact. It rewards patience over speed, and presence over performance.
A grandfather and his grandson can sit at one without searching for things to say. A father and his teenage daughter can finally have a conversation that doesn't need words. Two old friends who haven't seen each other in a decade can pick up exactly where they left off, no small talk required.
This is why we make chess sets, and why we will keep making them, no matter what "attention" looks like in the years to come.
For nearly thirty years, we have held ourselves to one question: if this were for me, what would I want it to be?
Some of our sets preserve the natural grain of solid wood: quiet, honest, and in no hurry to impress. Others are made from carefully molded plastic or silicone, and we say so plainly. Either way, we hold every contour, every line, and every point of balance to a standard made for real play. Every set is made for somewhere specific: a room, a gift, a player, a game waiting to begin.
What never changes is our respect: for the material, for the craft, and for the person who will eventually sit down to play.
Our wooden boards use traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without glue or nails. It is a time-honored form of craftsmanship based on a simple understanding: when wood is properly respected, it holds together with strength and grace. Our patented support-foot structure helps reduce the center ridge often found in folding boards, not because every player will notice, but because a player should never be distracted by it.
Our products meet international safety standards including GB 6675-4 (China), ASTM F963 (United States), and EN71 (European Union). Our wood is sourced from FSC-certified, responsibly managed forests, because a good game should begin with respect for quality, safety, and the planet.
We believe the chessboard is the fairest classroom humanity has ever invented. It does not ask where you come from. It does not look at your grades. It only cares about the choices you make across sixty-four squares. Focus, patience, foresight, and the courage to live with the consequences of a move you cannot take back: no textbook teaches these lessons as deeply as a serious game of chess.
In a generation growing up with a glowing screen in every pocket, helping young people find their way to the board is part of why we exist. We are quietly doing one thing: putting something real and weighted back into their hands, and bringing a real person back across from them.
A chess set is more than a product. It is a lasting object for the everyday imagination, something that can sit on a table for years, gather its scratches, witness arguments and reconciliations, and accompany a family through many afternoons. So we make ours with that kind of life in mind.
If a piece is lost or damaged through normal use, we offer replacement support within our service policy. We back every set with a 365-day warranty, because a craft that cannot stand behind itself doesn't deserve the name.
There are always two people sitting at a chessboard. Everything we do is in service of one idea: to make that table worth sitting down at, and to give every opening move the chance to become an afternoon someone will remember for the rest of their life.
